RUNWAY 13-31, ALSO KNOWN AS THE BAY RUNWAY, WAS WIDENED FROM 150 FEET TO 200 FEET AS PART OF THE JFK DELAY REDUCTION PROGRAM
The project included milling six inches of existing runway asphalt and overlaying with 18 inches of concrete with Metaforms™. The runway is being paved with concrete instead of less-durable asphalt and widened to accommodate today’s bigger planes. At 14,572 feet, this is one of the longest runways in the world and the most used runway at JFK. Also, it’s a backup landing spot for the space shuttle. Reconstruction of the runway was completed on 6/29 within budget and ahead of schedule. Tutor Perini Corporation, a leading civil and building construction company, was awarded the $204 million contract.
